Riverside Secondary offers four Automotive courses at the senior level:
- Automotive 11
- Automotive 12 (General)
- Automotive 12 (Electrical)
- Automotive 12 (Engine & Drivetrain)
These courses combine practical "hands-on" work with the modern theory necessary to prepare students to deal with the increasingly complex & computerized world of modern automotive & transportation technology. All courses focus on building strong problem solving skills and safe working techniques. Students are expected to demonstrate mature, cooperative behaviour and safe work habits. These courses also encourage students to take personal responsibility and initiative in their learning by allowing self-directed projects with proper planning & approval.
The purpose of these courses is to learn and understand the basic mechanical, electrical, and fluid systems that make up the automobile. This course does not involve driving instruction beyond times where it is discussed because it is relevant to the diagnosis method, repair, or design study of a vehicle.
A driver's license is not required for these courses, however, most post-secondary programs involving vehicles require an 'N' before students can apply. As the "Learner" phase is considerably long, and the "N-Test" often difficult to pass on the first try, students should plan ahead to ensure they have the necessary requirements for the apprenticeship & trades program they wish to apply for.
