Riverside Secondary is home to a diverse student population of approximately 1400 students, 90 teachers and 25 support staff. With courses available in both the English and French Immersion programs, Riverside offers a wide variety of curricular and extra-curricular programs designed to meet the needs and interests of all our students. We offer a full range of academic programs, including Honours and Advanced Placement opportunities, as well as a huge variety of elective courses designed to give students a chance to explore and grow in their areas of interest. Riverside has a number of specialty programs, including a Culinary Arts Chef Training program offered in conjunction with Vancouver Community College, a partnership program with BCIT in advanced computer programming (CISCO), and a Hockey Academy which is open to boys and girls of all hockey skill levels, and a High Performance Athletic Academy for students wanting to engage in dryland training for their sport of choice. Riverside is also has an extensive Work Experience program so that students can begin to learn about potential careers before they make decisions about post-secondary options.
Offering a number of technology-based programs, Riverside is known as a 'technology school' and is a frontrunner in the district and the province. Students in grades nine through twelve bring their own laptops or tablets to school to integrate in their learning. They maintain an Edublog which highlights their learning in their courses and enables them to develop a positive digital profile to help in their pursuit of employment, scholarships, and post secondary learning. Students in senior grades can also apply to participate in our Science Co op program, which offers a cohort learning experience for those students interested in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and a relevant work experience in the science field. Riverside's teaching staff is dedicated to finding new and innovative ways of using technology for teaching and learning in all classrooms in our school.
Riverside has a thriving extracurricular program offered voluntarily by the staff and community coaches. Students can choose from a wide variety of clubs, leadership opportunities and athletic teams offered throughout the school year and we encourage all our students to participate in the wide array of options available to them. Riverside's athletics program has not only produced provincial championship level teams in a number of sports, but offers opportunities for students to participate in a huge variety of sports teams each year. Riverside also has over thirty clubs designed to address the interests of all students and offers both curricular and co-curricular student leadership opportunities.
The staff and administration at Riverside are committed to working alongside our parents and community to ensure the best possible learning experiences for our students. We value the diversity that exists within our school and local community and are proud of the many socially responsible projects and initiatives that have become a part of Riverside's culture. We are fortunate to have sister school relationships in South Korea, Japan, China, Italy, and Austria, providing our students with opportunities to travel overseas. Additionally, approximately 100 international students studying at Riverside provide our local students with new perspectives to better prepare them for a diverse and global world. We are proud of the relationships forged between staff, students and parents, as well as the quality of education and services provided to our learners.
