The Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program is a Federal Government-funded school-based settlement service for new immigrant families to meet their immediate and ongoing settlement needs.

Through this partnership, our program is designed to welcomeicon2.03de972907.jpg bring families and schools together to create a supportive environment where students and their parents/guardians can thrive.

We offer culturally responsive support for students and their parents/guardians by communicating in English, French or their home language whenever possible. Our goal is to build trusting relationships where everyone feels respected and information is always kept confidential.

Our priorities for supporting students and their parents/guardians are to: -

  • ensure that newcomer students are engaged in the school system and receive information to access school programs, after-school activities, employment, and post-secondary pathways;
  • connect newcomer students to community and social networks and provide knowledge related to their settlement journey;
  • ensure that newcomer parents/guardians are familiar with the school system, get involved in school activities, and are connected to community and government resources to support their children's educational attainment; and
  • facilitate an in-depth understanding of newcomer clients' general and language needs and assets to further settlement and language training pathways and outcome assessments.
  • Wraparound Services are provided to support vulnerable, multi-barriered, and/or high needs children and youth and their parents/guardians.
  • Referrals are made by SWIS to community and government resources linking students and their parents/guardians to: -
