SD43 information for parents/guardians

February 11, 2026

Dear SD43 Families,

Like many of you, we are deeply shaken by the tragic shooting in Tumbler Ridge, BC. Our hearts go out to the families and community members whose lives have been forever changed. Events like this effect all of us, and it is natural for worry and sadness to surface β€” especially when combined with the safety alerts we experienced in our own district last week. The tragic events in Tumbler Ridge, along with the challenges in our own community, may have caused fear, stress, or uncertainty for you and your family.

We are confident that our schools are safe. We are also sensitive to the fact that our community needs to hear that reassurance through action. Here is what is happening today:

  • Police are proactively increasing their presence within our school communities today.
  • We will be releasing a joint statement today with RCMP and Port Moody Police.
  • Schools are being provided with resources to support students and staff who may be experiencing heightened anxiety.
  • The district is being supported by coordinated provincial programs to ensure we are following best practices.

Recovery looks different for everyone, and reactions may vary widely depending on age, past experiences, and individual temperament. Children and teens often look to the adults around them for reassurance, information, and guidance. Please know that our calm and caring presence β€” even when we are coping with our own feelings β€” can make a tremendous difference. We remain committed to supporting your children, nurturing a sense of safety and belonging, and working together to continue building a caring community for all.

We encourage families to consider the following:

  • Monitor exposure to news and social media: Repeated viewing of upsetting images or commentary can heighten anxiety. Please consider discouraging the sharing or reposting of graphic or speculative content.
  • Ask your child what they have heard and how they are feeling. Open-ended questions can help clarify misconceptions and provide reassurance.
  • Provide age-appropriate facts: Be honest, but gentle. It is okay to acknowledge when you do not have all the answers.
  • Maintain routine: Predictability and normal daily structure help children feel secure during uncertain times.

In our schools, student safety and well-being remains our highest priority. Counsellors and trusted adults are available to support students who may need additional care. Please reach out to your school if you have concerns about your child.

Here are some additional resources you may find helpful:

Flags will be half-masted across the district and province until further notice in honour of the Tumbler Ridge community.

We expect to be able to share joint messaging from the RCMP and Port Moody Police later today.
