Before registering for a course, all students must have an approved account.

PROGRAM INFORMATION:

Secondary Skill Building courses are non-credit courses.  

Students may take these courses to review previously covered course content OR to preview a course that they will take in the future.  

Students completing these courses do not receive a final letter grade nor is this course recorded on their transcript.

Only students currently in Grade 8 or older are eligible to register for afternoon classes.

 A refundable $100 deposit applies.  There are transfer and/or withdrawal fees associated with course changes.  See Fees and Refunds/Withdrawals.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

English 10 Skill Building.  This course will cover content described in the new BC curriculum for English Language Arts.  More info will be provided about this course in early April.

English for School Success

For students entering Grade 9, 10, 11 or 12 in September 2018. This course is for ELL students at the beginner level, Level 1 or 2.  It is designed to help students who are new to Canada or the English Language in improving basic English skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, writing with an emphasis on oral communication skills.  In this course students will also be introduced to Canada and Canadian culture.

Tech Ed for students entering Grades 9 or 10 will be located at Centennial Secondary

MODELS OF POWER:  ALTERNATIVE ENERGIES:  Morning course(8:30-11:30am):
Learn about alternative energies (eg solar power, hydrogen fuel cells, biomass & biofuels, water & wind powered turbines). Our studies will include hands-on activities, no prior technical experience is required.  Students will build a small scale model of an alternative energy engine!


HOW CARS WORK & THE FUTURE OF AUTONOMOUS CARS:  Afternoon course (12:00-3:00pm):
Learn about the basics of how our traditional cars work and some of the minimal maintenance requirements, including an introduction to basic hand tools. Learn about hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles, and autonomous vehicles (self-driving cars).   Work with actual cars and go-karts.  Students will also build a small model e.g. robot!

No prior technical experience is required. 
Tools and safety equipment are provided 
This course will be a safe and satisfying experience for all types of learners going into Grade 9 or 10 this September. 

 (Note: a $15 deposit will be charged at the time or registration.  This is nonrefundable as it covers the cost of materials for this course) 

French 9/10:  Learn an incredible amount of French in a short amount of time in this engaging, high energy class. Using the TPRS method (Teaching Proficiency through Storytelling and Reading), students will be exposed to high-level grammar and language structures. Students will be actively listening, speaking, reading, writing and acting throughout the three weeks of classes. This course is excellent for students who enjoy a fun filled class rich in learning. This course is open to students entering Grade 9 this September or students who have completed French 9 or 10 and would like to really solidify what they have learned.

PMSS IB Math 9

(For students entering International Baccalaureate at Port Moody Secondary only)

Home Economics/Culinary Arts for students entering Gr 9 or 10

Coding (Info & Comm Tech 9):  This course is for   students currently in Grade 8, 9, or 10 who are beginners or novices when it comes to computer programming (coding) but want to advance their coding abilities while learning skills needed for taking ICT and Business Ed courses in high school: 

  • basic coding techniques
  • html coding & scripting; including website design
  • flash animation
  • use of Scratch and other software
  • Digital media
  • Based on new curriculum:  ADST 9 Applied Design, Skills and Technology
  • please note that actual course may not include all of the above components
