Superintendent's letter re: Closing schools Monday, June 28

June 27, 2021

Dear SD43 families,

Due to the dangerous record-breaking temperatures and long duration heat wave affecting our communities until at least the end of day on Monday, we have made the difficult decision to close all schools to students on Monday, June 28.  Secondary students that require access to their schools for assessments or critical coursework will have the opportunity to visit school buildings.

We are particularly concerned about the effects of the heat wave on our students being exacerbated by the necessity to follow COVID-19 health and safety measures.  Though plans to use fans to exhaust hot air, keep windows open and other measures were in place to keep classrooms comfortable, concerns are rising as the temperature becomes more and more challenging.  The possibility of having to wear a mask under such conditions would certainly be uncomfortable for most.

While we do not make this decision lightly, the health and safety of our students is always our primary consideration.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Staff will be on-site to support students that do arrive at school.  Individual administrators will communicate specific information regarding postponing or cancelling scheduled leaving ceremonies, as needed.

Sincerely,

 Patricia Gartland
Superintendent/CEO
