On February 1, 2019, the Syntechs Robotics Club from Heritage Woods Secondary School hosted its very first VEX Competition BC Winter Qualifiers where close to 60 teams from all over BC competed to qualify for event championships and to secure a spot at the provincials.
Despite the clubs first time hosting a tournament of this type in the school district, the Syntechs Robotics Club won the Tournament Build Award and even qualified for provincials due to skill points ranking them 800th out of almost 4500 teams in the world. In addition to this award, they received 2 Sportsmanship awards and 1 Judge's award from 3 tournaments this season.
The Syntechs Robotics Club have been participating in international robotics competitions, including the VEX robotics competition, for 2 full seasons. It has been generously supported by Heritage Woods Secondary School and their PAC since its inception 4 years ago. The club currently has 30 members and is led by teachers James Zhuang, Angeline Lee and 3 volunteer parents that come to after school work sessions. Students meet every day after school and have dedicated 15 to 20 hours a week to design, build, program and test the robots since September of last year.
James Zhuang writes "I'm extremely proud of our teams' accomplishments, especially considering we're still very new to the games."
The Syntechs Robotics Club will be competing at the provincials held on Saturday March 2ndfrom 9:00 am to 5:30 pm at Seaquam Secondary in Delta. 40 teams from all over the province will be competing for just 11 spots available for the world championships.
