Bricklayer (Mason)


Occupation Description: 
Bricklayers build and repair walls, floors, arches, pavings, partitions, fireplaces, chimneys, smokestacks, furnaces, kilns and oth​er structures. They work with materials such as brick, natural stone, manufactured stone, tiles, precast masonry panels, glass blocks, concrete blocks, lightweight insulated panels, other masonry units, insulation and membranes. They erect, install, maintain, repair and alter various masonry. The structures vary in complexity from a simple masonry walkway to an ornate exterior on a multi-level building.

Application Process/Steps

Unfortunately the current instructor is retiring and Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) has decided to suspend any more offerings/intakes for the 2022-23 school year. Any further intakes would not happen, if at all, until the 2023-24 school year.

Time Commitment

  • 1 intake:  September (ending in late January)​
  • 5 months long
  • 4 days a week (Mon - Thurs)
  • 8.30am to 3.00pm

Student Eligibility

  • limited to 2 Coquitlam SD43 students - other students are from SD42
  • students typically take this program in their grade 12 year after taking all the necessary/core grade 11 subjects
  • students must begin a program prior to June 30 in th​eir graduation year
    • ex 1:  a grade 12's program begins in March and runs for 23 weeks - this is okay for a grade 12 student​ to participate in
    • ex 2:  program will begin in August after a grade 12 has graduated - that current grade 12 should not apply as they will not be accepted​
  • must have government-issued photo ID that is current/valid on the ​ITA exam date in late January (ex: a driver's license, BC ID, or passport)
  • unfortunately, this program is not available to "International students" ​

Student Cost

  • tuition-free, but students will need to pay about $300 for course materials, textbook, etc

Location + Transportation

  • Pitt Meadows Secondary - 19438 116b Avenue, Pitt Meadows
  • Transportation, to and from the training site, is the responsibility of the parent/guardian
    • ​Bus #701 is a good option to get to the high school​​


  • completed all grade 11 core subjects
  • good literacy and numeracy skills
  • excellent​ attendance + lates record while in high school
  • ability to lift 25 pounds on a regular basis
