Course Information*

Advanced and Beginner Band 6/7/8

A $40 deposit will be charged at the time or registration. This is nonrefundable as it covers the cost of music books in both band courses.

This course includes both Advanced Band (with current instrument;  students should have at least one year's experience with their instrument) and Beginning Band (a new instrument).    

1) Instrumental rentals will be available for a fee, sponsored by a local music store

2)  Instrument options:  Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone Horn, French Horn, Tuba, Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Oboe, Alto/Tenor Saxophones, Bassoon, and a limited number of percussion and bass guitars.  In Advanced Band, violin, viola, cello and string bass are additionally available for students with at least one year's experience on one of these instruments.

Students taking band in their home school during the regular school year:  Please note that your teachers make separate decisions re: instrument selection based on suitability, program needs and availablility.

Students in Beginner Band should be essentially brand new to their instrument. Students who register for this course will benefit from instruction in a band class for half the morning AND a Visual Arts class for the other half.

English for School Success Grades 6/7/8 (for students new to Canada)

For students entering Grade 6, 7 or 8 in September 2018. Designed for students new to English and to Canada, this program teaches beginner's English language skills that will support future academic success and introduces students to Canadian culture. French Immersion Language Arts 6, 7, & 8

Designed for students who are currently enrolled in a French Immersion program.  This class gives students the opportunity to continue their French language learning in a relaxed atmosphere.  This course is only open to students who are enrolled in French Immersion this September. Guitar 6/7/8

Designed for those with little or no previous experience on the guitar. Learn the basic chords and how to read guitar tab. In addition to learning several classic and contemporary songs, students will also have the opportunity to suggest songs that they wish to learn. Students will learn basic guitar techniques that include tuning, strumming, picking, power and barre chords, basic chord theory, major and minor pentatonic scales, and some extended guitar techniques that will be taught through the songs chosen to study. The school provides guitars, tuners, and music for this course. 

(Note: a $15 deposit will be charged at the time or registration.  This is nonrefundable as it covers the cost of materials for this course e.g., picks & strings)

Culinary Arts / Home Economics 6/7/8

This non-credit preview course is designed to improve skill level and provide insight into other courses offered in Food Studies and Culinary Arts. This course will focus on food preparation techniques and healthy meal planning with activities that include recipe demos, cooking labs, and food marketing/sales. All students that have a desire to learn more about cooking healthy food options are encouraged to apply. No prior cooking experience is required. Students will also learn about planting and harvesting herbs for cooking. The course will conclude with an Iron Chef Style cook-off Note: This skill building course does not replace a full-credit course in this subject. Science (Ecology Focus) 6/7/8

This class will give students both in-class and outdoor experiences related to science concepts covered at grade level.  Students can expect to take part in hands-on activities and experiments in addition to regular classroom activities. ​Information Technology: Computational Thinking & Coding 6/7/8

This course will take middle students (Grades 6-8) through a series of computer 'programming' (coding) activities and projects.  Use of computers and other digital devices will give students a unique experience and skill set that they can apply in the upcoming school year to classroom projects.  Students will also engage in "unplugged" activities and games that enhance computational thinking.

Math Problem Solving Discovery 6/7

In this course, discovery learning will take place in problem solving situations where the learner draws on their own experience and prior knowledge to explore and challenge their mathematical understanding. Students will be provided with fun, engaging, and enriching mathematical tasks that will enable them to experiment with mathematical procedures and algorithms in creative and collaborative ways in order for them to see the fun in the Math while also thinking critically about it.

Genius Hour 6/7/8

Genius Hour is an opportunity for students to explore their personal passions and interests, and encourage creativity in education. Students will be asked to choose something that they are passionate about, question and explore that passion through inquiry, and finally use their creativity to enhance and share their new knowledge. Digital technology will be used and various presentation programs will be explored. Students are encouraged to bring personal devices.

Media Literacy - Social Studies / Current Events 6/7

This course aims to help students to develop their critical thinking and creative thinking skills. These skills are essential for navigating our increasingly digital world. We will explore topics such as website design, media analysis, and current events.

**Middle school courses are designed to give students more time in a subject area or to provide a chance to preview a subject area.  This course is available to all middle school students, including ELL(ESL) students.  Classes do NOT replace an entire grade.
