Course Information*

Advanced and Beginner Band 6/7/8

A $50 deposit applies to all summer band courses.  This covers the costs of music books.  Students will usually want to keep the books assigned to them and forfeit a to-be-determined amount of the deposit.  Students who return books in perfect condition will receive a full refund. 

This course includes both Advanced Band (with current instrument;  students should have at least one year's experience with their instrument) and Beginning Band (a new instrument).    

1) Instrumental rentals will be available for a fee, sponsored by a local music store

2)  Instrument options:  Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone Horn, French Horn, Tuba, Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Oboe, Alto/Tenor Saxophones, Bassoon, and a limited number of percussion and bass guitars.  In Advanced Band, violin, viola, cello and string bass are additionally available for students with at least one year's experience on one of these instruments.

Please note that teachers in the regular home school band programs make decisions re: instrument selection based on suitability, program needs and availablility.

Students in Beginner Band should be essentially brand new to their instrument. Students who register for this course will benefit from instruction in a band class for half the morning AND a Visual Arts class for the other half.

English for School Success 6/7/8 (for students new to Canada)

For students entering Grade 6, 7 or 8 in September 2017. Designed for students new to English and to Canada, this program teaches beginner's English language skills that will support future academic success and introduces students to Canadian culture. French Immersion Language Arts 6, 7, & 8

Designed for students who are currently enrolled in a French Immersion program.  This class gives students the opportunity to continue their French language learning in a relaxed atmosphere.  This course is only open to students who are enrolled in French Immersion this September. Home Economics/Culinary Arts 7/8/9

This non-credit preview course is designed to improve skill level and provide insight into other courses offered in Food Studies and Culinary Arts. This course will focus on food preparation techniques and healthy meal planning with activities that include recipe demos, cooking labs, and food marketing/sales. All students that have a desire to learn more about cooking healthy food options are encouraged to apply. No prior cooking experience is required. Students will also learn about planting and harvesting herbs for cooking. The course will conclude with an Iron Chef Style cook-off Note: This skill building course does not replace a full-credit course in this subject. These courses combine concepts from two or more subject areas, enabling students to make powerful connections between different curriculum areas. The newly revised BC Curriculum features more integration of subject areas, with the intention that students gain a deeper understanding of curriculum content.

Montessori:  Curriculum Inquiry 6/7/8

Students explore a topic or subject of inquiry and personal interest.  Each morning will be structured as an Independent Work block, with time and space to explore interests within a range of curriculum areas. Taught by qualified, experienced Montessori teachers. Only students currently in Grades 5 to 8 and enrolled in (or formally registered for this September) for SD43 Montessori programs can register for this Montessori Summer Learning. This course furthers students' Physical Education abilities while enhancing their leadership skills.  It involves a blend of physical activities and some classroom learning.  The class will plan and implement fun school-wide events.  Students who enjoy being active and want to become even better leaders are most ideally suited to this course. Performing Arts/Drama Improv 6/7/8

Problem Based Learning/ Inquiry Focus Math/Science:  Grades 6/7/8

This course will allow middle school students to focus on curriculum areas of Math and Science using a problem-based learning focus. Activities will include creative problem solving and inquiry based learning. Students will:
• engage in a series of real life design challenges that may include structural design, bottle rockets, and other hands-on activities
• learn about and apply key concepts in math and science to their problem solving
• work individually and in small groups
• additionally learn some magic tricks that incorporate math/science concepts
• have some opportunities for choice of activities

This class will give students both in-class and outdoor experiences related to science concepts covered at grade level.  Students can expect to take part in hands-on activities and experiments in addition to regular classroom activities. ​Information Technology: Computational Thinking & Coding 6/7/8

This course will take middle students (Grades 6-8) through a series of computer 'programming' (coding) activities and projects.  Use of computers and other digital devices will give students a unique experience and skill set that they can apply in the upcoming school year to classroom projects.  Students will also engage in "unplugged" activities and games that enhance computational thinking.

Tech Ed (Wood & Aerodynamics/Rocketry) for students entering Grades 7, 8, 9, or 10 will be located at Dr. Charles Best Secondary

WOODWORKING: Get ready to make some sawdust and build a project that you can be proud of!  By learning how to use several woodworking machines you will gain the ability to create useful products out of wood.  Among other things you will learn how to cut, shape, and join pieces of wood together.  Your skills will grow in this exciting “hands on” environment where you will get to see your work pay off

AERODYNAMICS AND ROCKETRY:  This Pre-Engineering course will be an opportunity for students to explore the wonders of aerodynamics and flight.  Students will construct and test Lighter than Air Gliders and other vehicles. Topics covered will include Newton’s laws, Aerodynamics as well as the various shop and safety skills necessary to construct the projects.

**Middle school courses are designed to give students more time in a subject area or to provide a chance to preview a subject area.  This course is available to all middle school students, including ELL(ESL) students.  Classes do NOT replace an entire grade.
