Digital Immersion FAQ (Updated Oct. 24th 2011)

Q: What courses are in the Digital Immersion (DI) Program @ Riverside?

A: The graphic above shows the progression through the Digital Immersion Program @ Riverside.

Q: How are the courses grouped at the grade 9 level? Do I take them all in one semester or two?

A: Applications of Technology and Science courses are together in one semester and Socials Studies and English are linked in the other semester.

Q: Can you take Digital Immersion (DI) and French Immersion (FRIM) at the same time?

A: Because of course requirements within the French Immersion program, students need to choose between DI 9 and FRIM 9. At the grade 11 level it is possible for a FRIM student (if scheduling allows) to take English 11 DI.

Q: How many electives can I take if I am accepted into the DI Program at the grade 9 level?

A: You can take two other electives (one usually includes a language).

Q: Do I bring my own Laptop?

A: Yes, or you can rent one from the school for $25 per month. No student will be turned away from the class due to financial hardship.

Q: If I choose to buy a laptop or netbook, what should I get?

A1: For a laptop, try to get a smaller screen model (they are lighter) running the latest operating system. 2Gigs of ram, 160Gig Hard Drive, and the rest is what you are comfortable with (warrenty, processor, etc...).

A2: For a netbook, look for the fastest processer for the pricepoint you want to pay. Solid State Hard Drives offer a more sturdy option but often increase the cost significantly. A 10 inch screen is recommended.

Q: Do I need to have any specific programs for the program if I am bringing my own laptop?

A: Not specifically, you do need to maintain a stable internet connection. Computers need to be running Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7 or Apple OS X with updated virus/malware protection (as per SD43 criteria).

Q: Can I take Math 9 Honours and still be in the Digital Immersion Program?

A: Yes, your math component is separate from the DI courses.

Q: Can I take Science 9 Honours and the Digital Immersion Program?

A: Students must choose between Digital immersion and Science 9 Honours.

Q: What type of student excels in the DI program?

A: Please see the Digital Immersion Learning Profile
