an exciting volunteer opportunity for Coquitlam high school students.
We’re currently recruiting volunteers for our 2012 Beachkeepers program
Beachkeepers is a summer stewardship program at Belcarra Regional Park in Port Moody. Founded in 1997, this partnership between Metro Vancouver and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada is a great opportunity for youth to gain experience in the science and education fields.
The volunteer position involves three main activities: a scientific crab study on the dock (measuring and sexing crabs and recording any injuries); educating park visitors about intertidal creatures such as crabs and sea stars; and explaining fishing regulations and beach etiquette to park visitors. An average shift is five hours and would involve a combination of all three activities and a half an hour lunch break.
Beachkeepers runs June 30th to September 3rd on weekends and holidays. The time commitment required of volunteers is a minimum of thirty hours (6 five hour shifts). No previous knowledge of marine life or fishing regulations is required; a mandatory one-day training session on June 17th is provided.
