Hello Grade 11/12 Parents,
Some of you may be aware of “Grad Trips” planned for this January and for Spring Break 2013, sponsored by a companies called S-Trip and Breakaway Tours. These are not Centennial School trips, and they have no affiliation with the school whatsoever. Recently a representative from S-Trip met with a group of our students for a trip to the Dominican Republic.
Sales representatives from the company contact students in the schools to recruit their classmates for these trips. Often the recruitment happens around school or on Facebook, Twitter, etc. We do not sanction or allow these meetings to occur at school, and are concerned that some of our graduates go on these trips. We are also concerned that some students represent the nature of this trip to their parents as school sanctioned. Again, this is not the case.
Over the last few years, over 200 high school students from the Tri-Cities have traveled to the Dominican Republic and Big White, and or other locales. Many students reporting back to us relayed that there was little or no adult supervision from the tour operators, indicated to us that many students vandalized property, and were most definitive, that alcohol consumption by minors was rampant. Two years ago in a trip to the Dominican Republic, a few students contracted viral meningitis, and returned to Canada very ill.
We know that if our own children were considering such a trip, we would want to make an informed decision about whether or not they should go. We see it as our duty to look after the well-being of our students at all times.
We would suggest to you, that should your child show interest in going on the trip, that you have a very frank conversation about its nature, and that you thoroughly research the proposal before deciding.
Once again, we do not have any affiliation, responsibility or relationship with these companies, and these are not school sponsored trips. All school trips abroad have very strict protocols and guidelines to ensure student safety, and parent meetings are an absolute requirement.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of the administrators at the school.
Sincerely
Robert Zambrano

We are pleased to announce next year’s EUROTOUR 2013. During Spring Break 2013, we will explore parts of GREECE AND ITALY.
During our 2 week tour, we will visit many of these countries most famous landmarks. In our experience as teachers, we have found that the benefits of travel for students are extensive. Not only do they experience new places and cultures, but they also gain confidence in themselves and a new perspective on the world. Travel experience can also prove helpful when applying to colleges and universities.
We have chosen to travel with EF for the past 21 Eurotours because they have been in business for over 40 years and have offices around the world, which makes us feel secure. The cost of the tour includes round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, a full-time EF Tour Director, daily breakfast and dinner, entrance fees to select attractions and guided sightseeing.
Many applications have already been processed. Please ask your child to see Mrs. R. Ciardullo or Mrs. M. Thomas for a copy of this exciting itinerary.
There will be a parent information meeting on Wednesday, April 11th at 7:00 p.m. in the Centennial Theatre.
Warm regards,
Rose Ciardullo and Maria Thomas |

Semester 2 Start-Up
Over the last few weeks of Semester 1, students were given the opportunity to pickup and review their schedules for next semester. They also had several days to attempt to make course changes if they felt it was necessary to do so. We expect the majority of students to begin second semester January 30th with the schedules they have already received.
If:
· students have already made course changes, yet did not receive a new timetable, we would like them to see their counsellor, or the office this week to obtain one
· students know they have failed a course, that will affect their schedule next term, they need to see their counsellor this week
· students have not yet picked up their schedule, they can obtain one at the office this week
· students lost their schedule, they should come to the office this week
There may be some minor room changes to classes on the first day of Semester 2, so students should mind signs on doorways for a location change. Also, we expect to hire three new teachers immediately so that we will have all staff ready for Monday.
Monday is a regularly scheduled day.
Thank you again for your support. |
| 2/17/2012 | Please peruse the attachments for information on our hockey academy. Whether you're coming from one of our feeder schools, or you attend Centennial and have an interest, this might be the program for you!

Hello parents of our graduates,
In just under 6 months your little lovelies will be graduating high school!
In order to communicate some important bits of information, we typically hold a parent evening dedicated to all things related to Graduation. This year’s meeting will take place on Tuesday, January 24th at 7pm in the courtyard at Centennial.
Agenda items will be:
Graduation Timeline: Activities and Considerations
Expectations for our Graduates
Scholarship and Bursary application Information
General Questions and Answers
We hope you will be able to attend this meeting. Also please find attached the Grad 2012 Timeline of Activities.
Robert Zambrano |
| 1/22/2012 |
Timetables will be distributed in the courtyard on the following days to the applicable grade level.
Pick up times and the specific process will be shared with students via announcements and posters in the school.
We thank you in advance for your patience as the process of distribution will be different this year in the context we are currently in with the legal provincial job action by teachers.
Please consider that changes to timetables will be prioritized by need not want; with the primary concern being students in need of courses to meet graduation requirements. In many cases changes will not be possible due to limited availability.

Dear Parents / Guardians:
Attached please find a letter from Superintendent Tom Grant regarding district wide practice for the November Interim Report cards.
Due to provincial teacher job action the Centennial reporting timeline and report card you typically receive in November will be adjusted for the upcoming reporting period. For our grade 9, 10 and 11 students a report card will be sent home that indicates student attendance and course / teacher information. For our students in grade 12, expect a percentage grade as well as the attendance and course information.
In addition to the upcoming report cards, many teachers have already been in regular and ongoing communication with you regarding your child's progress. If you wish, teachers are available to communicate and will respond to written correspondence, phone calls or notes sent along with your child. Teacher email addresses can be found on the school website under the Staff Tab > Staff Directory.
Report cards will be handed out to students, by adminstrators, during period 2 on November 21st and 22nd.

Centennial After Grad is offering a unique fundraising idea for families, staff, neighbors, anyone! In partnership with Thrifty Foods, we have special “Smile Cards” available immediately. Your Smile Card is like a pre-purchased gift card, where you will “load” or pre-purchase an amount of money onto this card. You can load it with any form of payment (cash, debit, credit) so you can earn your other ‘points’ too! When you shop at Thrifty Foods you will use this “loaded Smile Card” to pay for your purchases. All money you load onto the card is available to be spent at the store – there is no cost to you, you are not losing anything and Centennial After Grad will benefit because Thrifty Foods will donate a value of FIVE PERCENT of all money that is loaded onto these Smile Cards!
The funds we receive through this program will be used towards our After Grad Event this year. This Smile Card program will be in effect from the time you receive your Smile Card until June 2, 2012. Please note: You can re-load your card as many times as you like…Don’t surrender it to the cashiers when empty…reload!
If you would like to order a “Centennial After Grad Smile Card” or if you have any questions regarding the program or how it works, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for supporting Centennial After Grad! Coleen Bohlen, Centennial After Grad Secretary, cbohlen@shaw.ca |

Thursday September 29th is the
Crazy Sustainable Commute 2011
Join us for a one-day challenge in having some serious fun getting to work or school!
The Crazy Sustainable Commute is a campaign to get us all thinking creatively about fun ecofriendly
alternatives for our daily travel. We hope to inspire commuters, particularly those who
normally travel by car, to find a different way of getting to work or school for one day. The
whole point is to have fun commuting while also reducing our use of fossil fuel consumption in
our methods of transportation.
See what some of the Crazy Sustainable Commuters did last year:
• Some inspired Vancouver Aquarium employees (and a Beluga whale) cartwheeled to the
Aquarium .
• A team from Fairware dressed for the occasion and rode to work together on tiny bikes.
• One sustainable-living Vancouverite got goofy and walked backwards to work, with his
clothes on backwards.
• And Steve, the brain behind the Crazy Sustainable Commute, canoed and portaged his way
to and from work that day.
Keep an eye on our website for this year’s crazy promotional video involving chickens!
Everyone has a different measure of crazy, so just try something fun and new that works for you.
Challenge yourself, your colleagues or your competition. Save money, get healthy, and become a
leader in sustainability at your workplace or school. Think outside the car. The more creative and
unique your ideas are, the greater our collective impact will be.
• Try the separated bike lanes downtown or any of the cycling routes throughout the city.
• Use a carpool or public transit for a day instead of driving alone.
• If you already bike or walk to school, kick up the fun factor and commute on rollerblades, a
unicycle , or even by canoe!
• Sign up, tell us your crazy idea for commuting this September 29th and see what others are
planning for this year’s Crazy Sustainable Commute.
We all need to work together to reduce our carbon footprint. Finding alternative transportation
options to the single occupancy vehicle is one of our biggest challenges today and for the future.
Each small step to reduce carbon emissions is one big step closer to a healthier planet and a
healthier you.
The Crazy Sustainable Commute was created in June 2010 by Steve Unger and a group of
friends, colleagues and collaborators in Vancouver, Canada to raise awareness on taking
sustainable transportation. Steve is an Ambassador for the David Suzuki Foundation’s At Work
program and co-creator of the Green Cafés, designed to share knowledge and best practices
around workplace sustainability.

During Phase 1 job action, teachers will continue to carry out their normal classroom
duties, including delivery of the BC curriculum
· During this phase, teachers will not be required (under the Labour Relations Board
Essential Services Act) to participate on any administration or school district organized
meetings; to supervise students before and after school, at recess and lunch hour
(teachers in Coquitlam have had a duty-free lunch for two decades); prepare or
distribute formal report cards; or conduct administratively organized parent/teacher
interviews
· As the safety of students always remains a top priority, administrative and management
personnel are providing student supervision at recess and are assisting with bus
supervision as identified
· CUPE support staff are performing their duties as usual
· Should parents have concerns about their child’s progress, they are encouraged to ask
questions of their child’s teacher directly, as teachers will not be providing formal written
reports or conducting administratively organized parent/teacher interviews
· The District will strive to preserve respectful relations with all its partner groups during
job action, while meeting our obligation under the School Act to educate students |

Dear Parents,
I would like to formally welcome you back to Centennial for the 2011/2012 year. Although the year has started off a little differently than usual, we are very happy to see your kids back with us, and welcome the new ones to our building. They have had a fantastic attitudinal start, and the tone of the first few days is better than any other year, since I have been here.
Your children have been extremely patient and respectful and I would also like to thank you for your support as we have “adjusted on the fly” at the start of this year.
Our enrolment has increased significantly over the last few weeks, and some adjustments to class timetables and course offerings will occur for second semester. It seems that we had had many people moving in to the area, while others are coming to take advantage of our excellent course offerings and extra-curricular activities. A pretty good problem to have, I say! This has, however, limited our ability to move student’s classes and honour some requests, and we apologize for that. It really brings to light the emphasis we must place on wise, informed course selection in the spring.
In any event, I’d like to take a moment to clarify a few things for you for the beginning of the year:
1. Our first PAC meeting is Monday, September 26. All our welcome to attend in the school library at 7 p.m. The PAC and school thanks you in advance for your donations so far. We have certainly already surpassed last year’s total amount!
2. Parent Orientation Night on Thursday, September 22 will not proceed as it has in the past. However, the administrative team will host an evening to discuss the school, answer your questions, and we will have students conducting tours of the building. Hopefully, you will take the opportunity to come and check out the school Thursday, September 21 at 7 p.m. in the Courtyard.
3. Tutorial: Many of you have asked about the nature of Tutorial. Tutorial is instructional time and teachers will be in the designated areas for the duration of the block 8:25 – 9:10 for three Fridays of every month, and occasionally on a day during the week from 10:15 – 10:40 a.m. Students are encouraged to attend to get extra assistance with homework or to get clarity on assignments or projects. Students must attend if they are assigned to tutorial by their parents, teacher, counsellor or administrator, to get extra help, complete missed work, or make up or re-do tests.
Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or counsellor for an update on progress, or an administrator for more information. We will try and send out as many updates and bits of information as we can over the next few weeks.
Thanks again for your support.

Centennial parents and students:
This is an important message with regards to our school schedule next week. As you may or may not know, teachers will be initiating Job Action next week, by refraining from conducting administrative work. Without going into all the details and the specifics of the actions, we have had to make few changes to the way we follow through on start up administrative procedures.
The schedule for next week remains unchanged. Students will report to homeroom at the times indicated in the mail out and on the website. At some point during the homeroom on Tuesday, teachers will escort their classes to the blue gym, where the bulk of work, like fee collection, timetable distribution, collection of forms etc will be performed by administrators, some support staff and management. Students are required to report to the homerooms on Wednesday and Thursday to verify attendance and enrolment – this is very important – and to get some necessary information on student safety and conduct. During these times, we will also continue to complete administrative duties for those students who require more time.
We ask you and your family to be patient as we undergo this process. Students may be waiting a little longer than they normally do, but I know that they will conduct themselves with the respect and grace we have come to expect from our students over the years, and which we expect as we start a new year.
We will have a good year, and our school will take care of your kids. Please refer to the school website for updates on information. In the next few weeks, I am sure that we will be sending more information home with regards to how the rest of the year will progress. As a result, please be sure to update all phone numbers and email addresses on the student verification forms sent home in the mail out.
Please do not hesitate to call or mail for more information.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Sincerely,
Mr. Robert Zambrano

| 6/30/2010 | Mrs. Charles is advising all students who took art in first and second semester that they should drop by the art room during exam week and pick up all their work left behind. Every year there are many folders and sketchbooks forgotten, and there is a limited amount of storage space. Students often contact me months or years after graduation asking for their work back. At that point, it is often too late as work has had to be recycled. While I do try to keep work for a few months after each course ends, this possibility is lessening as the work piles up. Avoid disappointment: pick up your work before a course finishes or soon after!! |

Centennial Secondary School is Planning for the Future
Centennial Secondary School will soon be re-built, and we want to hear from the Centennial community about Neighbourhood Learning Centres
In approving the replacement school for Centennial, the Ministry of Education has also committed to looking at Centennial for the Neighbourhood Learning Centres (NLC) initiative. The idea is to find unique and innovative ways to design schools with community use in mind. Schools within a NLC site could include services, such as: Child-care programs; Health Clinics; Sports programs; Family Resource centres; and recreational programs, to name a few examples. The intent behind this initiative is for schools and community organizations to partner together to create opportunities where people can access educational and community services under one roof.
To gain a better understanding of community needs, the district will be holding a community consultation with Centennial residents to determine how to best bring together community services and the school community. The date of the community consultation will be Wednesday June 9th, 2010 at 7:00 pm, located at Centennial Secondary School in the courtyard at the school’s main entrance.
