This November, the Terry Fox Link Crew has been busy supporting the Surrey Shoebox project. These shoeboxes are filled with much needed items, such as warm weather gear, toiletries and other personal care items. Link Crew students, fundraised, donated and purchased enough items to build 51 (one more than their goal) shoeboxes to be donated. We also had numerous donations from generous Terry Fox staff members that helped us reach this goal.
The recipients of these boxes come from an array of different backgrounds, including seniors 55+, new and expecting mothers and women of Aboriginal ancestry. Many of these women have fled abusive relationships and are now transitioning into a safer living environment. Depending on the shelter/transition house, women may be able to stay between a few weeks and several months. Sometimes when times are rough, it seems like all hope is lost and there is nowhere left to turn. The shoebox gift is a powerful reminder to recipients that they are not alone and that they are a valued and respected member of their community.
