Announcements

Today is the Asian Lunar New Year of the Tiger February 1, 2022! Did you know the majority of our grade 7s are tigers?! Tigers are known to be strong!

Please welcome the following guests to our school today, Ms. Schmidt and Lorna, our artist in residence! We trust you'll love it here at Moody with us! We also welcome a virtual author visit from David Robertson who wrote The Barren Ground!

Reminders from Ms. Jung

Safety First

We have a limited stock of masks so please be sure to reuse, repack and replenish your masks for school every night! A clean mask that is well fitted and 3 ply is best!

Icy Conditions

It is still winter and it is extremely icy out on the south side of the school by the sport court! Be careful, wear rubber soles and be prepared for the winter weather we are expecting in the next few days. Bring your hats, gloves, umbrellas, layers and proper footwear!

R is for Respect

Today we celebrate the first day of the new lunar year in many Asian cultures such as Chinese and Korean. While we don't all honour the lunar new year and calendar, we can recognize that others we know, do!

Wigs for Kids BC

If you have decided to cut your hair for child cancer patients in BC who have no hair, be sure to pick up a permission form from Ms. Jung!

Art Club

Today, we begin art club with Lorna! All Fire Pod students who are joining in today must eat lunch at noon and then head to the library learning lab after hand washing! Have fun! Tomorrow, it's Wind Pod's turn!

Mr. Clays' Jokes of the Day

Last night I dreamt in colour, but then I woke up and realized it was just a pigment of my imagination.

People have always told me that "icy" is the easiest word to spell. Now that I look at it, I see why.

SLC

Hello Moody! We are here with you to honour Lunar New Year 2022, that's today!

Celebrated by almost two billion people across the world though mainly in Asia, Lunar New Year has—as might be obvious—a longstanding connection to the phases of our Moon.

You might be curious to know, what determines the date of Chinese New Year?

The Moon, of course. Easter in Christianity falls on the first Sunday following the first full Moon or after the day of the vernal equinox. In the lunar Islamic calendar, Ramadan begins with the first sighting of a young crescent Moon in the ninth month. Chinese New Year is also a lunar festival. It starts on the day after the first New Moon that falls between January 21 and February 20 each year.

2022 is the Year of the Water Tiger! What's special about it?

In China, the tiger is known as the king of all beasts and is associated with bravery, confidence, and strength. This is also your special year if you are born in 1974, 1986, 1998, or 2010!

According to superstition, a person born in a particular year takes on the traits of that year's animal, so, those born in the year of the tiger are said to be charming, stubborn, brave, and competitive.

In China it's easy to see when the Lunar New Year is happening – festive red decor adorns every street, storefront, and home.

In some parts of China, this holiday is called a Spring Festival and bright floral arrangements and fruit trees also brighten homes and streets.

The colour red brings literal wealth in the form of red lai which are packets gifted to children and unmarried adults during the holiday.

You might be wondering, what is the next lunar celebration?

Well, as the Lunar New Year ends two weeks from now, the lantern festival begins with the date of the next full Moon. In 2022 that's the “Snow Moon," which falls on February 16, 2022, the same week as Valentine's Day!

That's all for now, have a great day Moody!
