April 08, 2013

Help Expand Our Green Classroom ~ The Garden

We are still looking for items for the garden.  We are hoping that over the next four months to start expanding the learning opportunities that the garden can create for all students at Harbour View.   Below we have created a wish list of items (new or used) that we would love to have to create a truly amazing Green Classroom.

Hard Goods ~ I am hoping that many of these things can be found around the house.

·  Used car or truck tires ~ these will be used for creating a “living green room”

·  Pieces of marine grade plywood (Larger than 3’X4’) ~ “a chalkboard/painting canvas”

·  Pieces of galvanized steel (larger than 3’x4’)  ~ “a chalkboard/painting canvas”

·  Chalkboard paint

·  Sidewalk Chalk

·  Large clear bins or totes

·  Plastic clip boards

·  Wagon

·  Used Step 2 water and sand play tables

·  2 wooden shipping pallet

·  Different shaped/sized balls, Frisbees, jump ropes

·  Mini used trampoline

·  6’ garden stakes (1’x1’ or 1’x2’)

·  Granular fertilizer or steer manure

·  Stake fertilizers for fruit trees, berry bushes and grapes

·  1.5’ to 2’ pieces of stumps ~ will be used for creating moveable seating

·

Seeds ~ We are looking for lots of variety and interesting species.  The kids love the vegetables that grow REALLY  LARGE or really fast or that are really, really weird.

·  Carrots ~ purple haze, cherry, pencil

·  Peas – regular, snap, snow peas…

·  Radishes ~ lots of different varieties

·  Potatoes ~ Purple, blue, banana…

·  Beans ~ bush, pole, scarlet….

·  Corn ~ fast growing

·  Pumpkins

·  Zucchini

·  Sunflowers ~ the biggest and the smallest

·  Marigolds ~ seeds and cell packs

·  Cosmos

·  Plants

·  Blue berry bushes

·  Other berry bushes ~ we now have lots of raspberries

·  Creeping thyme and other smelly herbs ~ for the creation of a sensory garden

·  A fruit tree ~ maybe a plum tree or ?

Donate your time or money

·  Volunteer your time in the garden ~ There is always lots to do. Cleaning up the beds and the shed.  Constructing or fixing up the beds and the shed.  Setting up the irrigation lines.  Helping the children to build the “living room.”  In the next few weeks we need some plywood cut for the garden area.

·  Volunteer your ideas and knowledge~ If you have a great idea let us know.

·  Donate money that is designated solely to the garden.  This money will be used for developing the Green Classroom.

If you are able to donate any of the following items please let Ms. Lil know.
