JumpstART FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about the JumpstART Program

Is JumptArt a one year program or does it run until grade 12? This is a program only for grade 9's.

What does a JumpstArt schedule look like? Students stay as a JumpstArt cohort for the entire morning for the entire year. They start the day in Humanities with Ms. Quach and then move as a group to see Mr. McElgunn for Art.

What credits are earned during a student's year in JumpstArt?  At the end of JumpstArt, they will have earned credit for English 9, Social Studies 9, and two Art 9 electives.

What is the process to apply to JumpstArt?  If your child is in the Gleneagle catchment, the process is quite simple. In February, all the grade 8's who are in the Gleneagle catchment come for a tour of the school.  At this time, every student received information about selecting courses for Gleneagle. Just select "JumpstArt 9."

What should I do if we live outside of the Gleneagle catchment area? If you are outside of the Gleneagle catchment area, you will need to complete the cross-catchment process (the form is available on the district website  or at the office of any SD #43 school ). Put "To attend the JumpstArt program" as your reason for the request. Be sure to note the dates for this process as it becomes much more difficult to change schools once this process is closed.  Once the cross-catchment process is completed, you will be called into the school to fill out some paperwork including a course selection sheet. This is when one actually selects the JumpstArt program.

Does my child need to submit a portfolio to enter the program?  There is no interview or portfolio process. To this point we have been able to accommodate everyone who has requested the program. If we have more applicants than space, we will ask for a teacher reference and to have students express in writing why they feel they would be a good fit for a program like this.

My art skills require work.  Should I still apply? You should apply if you have a desire to improve your art skills and if you love to see connections between ideas.  You will be taught art skills but you must come in to the program with an inclination to expand ways to show your learning.

Will I be able to be in Jumpstart and still join Band?

Unfortunately, Band and Jumpstart both run in the mornings so there is a conflict.  However, many Jumpstart students and just waited a year and joined band in Grade 10.

What does an ideal Jumpstart student look like?  A JumpstArt student loves to see connections between different areas.  They love to think about and debate big ideas such as freedom, independence and democracy.  They are interested in what makes people tick.  A JumpstArt student wants show what they've learned in a variety of ways.  A JumpstArt student thinks visually and in pictures and is able to make comparisons between things (metaphors).
