Closure of Schools for Extreme Weather Conditions

In the case of extreme weather conditions such as ice, wind and/or excessive snowfall, the Superintendent of Schools has authority on behalf of the Board, to temporarily close a school.

As a general expectation, parents should assume that schools are open.  If parents believe the local conditions are unsafe, they should keep their child at home or arrange his/her early dismissal.  If schools are to be closed before morning classes begin, an announcement will be made on local radio stations CKNW (980), CKWX (1130) and CBC (690) by 7:30 am if possible.

Please look at www.sd43.bc.ca for a list of any temporary school closures due to inclement weather.

If It Snows...Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Please do not assume that the school is closed and PLEASE don’t call the school to check to see if we are closed!  There are 2 places to look and listen.  CKNW 980AM will regularly announce school closures in the event of a significant snowfall.  As well, the School District Website (www.sd43.bc.ca) will be updated with any school closures from 6:00 am on.  Make sure you hit your refresh button each time you check the district website.  Please refer to those two resources for updated information on school closures.

BC Education PlanUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

B.C.’s Education Plan engagement site has been up and running since October 28th. Since then, we’ve been hearing from hundreds of B.C. citizens about their thoughts on the ministry’s blueprint for education transformation – BC’s Education Plan.

The questions on the engagement site have changed to a new theme - flexibility and choice. The three new questions are:

1.     What do you think are the benefits and challenges to offering students more flexible learning opportunities?

2.     Flexibility and choice are evident in many B.C. schools and communities. Do you have some good examples to share?

3.     How do you think our schools and school districts need to change to support more flexibility and choice?

To learn more about the Plan and to share your thoughts and ideas with us on the direction you would like to see education go in the future, please visit http://www.bcedplan.ca. You can also follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/#!/bcedplan. We will continue to post regular updates on the website including highlights of what we are hearing from the conversation in the discussion forum.

Parents' Guide to FacebookUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Here is a great resource:
Parents' Guide to Facebook is designed to help you understand what Facebook is and how to use it safely. With it, you will be better informed and able to communicate with young Facebook users in your life more effectively. That's important because 1) if something goes wrong, we want our children to come to us and 2) as the Internet becomes increasingly social and mobile, a parent’s guidance and support are ever more key to young people’s well-being in social media and technology.
