Code of Conduct 
 

 I. INTRODUCTION

The following section delineates Irvine Elementary School’s expectations around student behavior and describes the École Irvine Elementary School Code of Conduct for all children, in order to maintain a safe, caring and orderly environment for purposeful learning.

The District Code of Conduct is the outline upon which École Irvine Elementary School Code of Conduct is based.

Irvine Elementary School’s Code of Conduct is based on the following simple motto ~ Be a STAR:  take care of yourself, take care of others and take care of this place ~ this motto is a guide for all members of the school community. 

STARS is an acronym focusing on five main principles: 

  • Safety
  • Think
  • Accept
  • Respect
  • Stand Up

The guiding principles are also taught and modeled throughout the school year.  Examples are posted in each classroom and the hallways.

II.        CODE OF CONDUCT:  KEY ELEMENTS

 1.      Process

Irvine’s Code of Conduct was developed through a collaborative and communicative process that involved members of the school community:  students, parents, and staff.  Review discussions occur during September and May staff and SPC meetings, as well as with Grade 4/5 Leadership and class monitor students in May of each year. 

2.     Communication

Expectations regarding acceptable conduct are made known to all students, parents and school staff, as well as to temporary staff and visitors.  Protocols, while acting as ambassadors of the school, are also made known to students, parents, coaches and involved members of the greater community.

 The Irvine Code of Conduct and the associated expectations will be:

  • articulated to students by their teacher
  • a key part of the first week start up procedures
  • clearly stated in the student planner, which is distributed to each student at the commencement of the school year
  • Teachers will refer to our Code of Conduct on a continual basis
  • articulated to parents by sending home a copy of Irvine’s Code of Conduct and by posting the Irvine’s Code of Conduct on our Sharepoint website. The STARS program is also posted on website and every classroom by emergency information.  This program information will be sent home in the fall in a newsletter insert to all families and is included in the planner insert. 
  • Code of Conduct is included in TOC binder for each staff member

In addition, Irvine’s Code of Conduct will be evident in our behavior motto:  Be a STAR: take care of yourself, take care of others and take care of this place, which is posted in the front entrance as a guide for all members of the school community.  STARS is an acronym focusing on five main principles:

3.  Implementation


The elements in the Irvine Code of Conduct will be implemented in numerous ways throughout the school year.  Strategies and structures utilized will include:

  • direct classroom teaching and discussion,
  • student group work,
  • monthly assemblies for recognition, STARS and Bucket Draws (How Full is your Bucket by Tom Rath & Mary Reckmeyer.)
  • Leadership Club activities and posters
  • family grouping activities (1st Week activities, Sports Day, Summer Fun Activity Day)
  • regular morning PA announcements, ongoing modeling by all adult members of the school community

4.   Monitoring and Review


Irvine’s Code of Conduct aligns with our school focus on Social Responsibility and our Fill your Bucket program.  Regular reading of book How Full is your Bucket by Tom Rath & Mary Reckmeyer.

We will monitor, assess and revise as and/or if necessary based on the specific needs of the students within our school community.  Collaborative discussions with SPC, PAC, students, parents, and staff will occur should and/or if this need arises.


5.   Alignment

Irvine’s Code of Conduct is aligned with:

  • Kwayhquitlam Middle School's Code of Conduct (more than 95% of our Grade 5's attend Kwayhquitlam, annually)
  • other elementary schools in the district as well as the family of schools in our geographical area
  • It is also in alignment with our District Code of Conduct.  
  • Discussions with the members of our community of schools take place regularly throughout the school year. 
  • Structured opportunities to discuss these issues occur during select superintendent meetings.

6. Standards

École Irvine Elementary School promotes the values expressed in the BC Human Rights Code respecting the rights of all individuals in accordance with the law- prohibiting discrimination based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation – in respect of discriminatory publication and discrimination in accommodation, service and facility in the school environment. 

a.     The purpose of Irvine’s Code of Conduct:

                 I.          To establish and maintain safe, caring and orderly environments for purposeful learning (respect for self, respect for others);

               II.          To establish and maintain appropriate balances among individual and collective rights, freedoms, and responsibilities (respect for self, respect for others);

              III.          To clarify and publish expectations for student behaviour while at school, while going to and from school, and while attending any school function or activity at any location (respect for self, respect for others, respect for the environment).

b.    Conduct Expectations

i. Students are expected to:

  • Speak and act towards other students and staff so that words and actions do not cause injury or discomfort to anyone;
  • Treat other students and all staff members with caring and respect.  Refrain from all acts of bullying[1] – verbal, non-verbal or relational;
  • Arrive to school on time and ready to learn;
  • Give every assignment the very best effort and complete homework;
  • Be prepared – arrive in class each day with the necessary materials for learning;
  • Follow the individual rules, guidelines and instructions of all classroom teachers and staff;
  • Take pride in their school and respect the surrounding community.

ii.  Unacceptable conduct:

  • Actions and/or words that cause injury and/or discomfort to others;
  • Acts of bullying[2], harassment, or intimidation (verbal, non-verbal or relational);
  • Behaviours that interfere with an orderly, safe, and caring learning environment.
  • Illegal acts, such as:
  • possession or under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol
  • possession or use of weapons
  • theft or damage to school property
  • not discriminate against others on the basis of the race, religion, sex or sexual orientation, or disability, or for any other reason set out in the Human Rights Code of British Columbia, nor shall a student publish or display anything that would indicate an intention to discriminate against another, or expose them to contempt or ridicule, on the basis of such grounds.
  • be subject to discipline under the school and/or District Code of Conduct for any conduct which has the effect of negatively impacting the school environment, whether that conduct occurs on or off School District property, at a school sponsored function or activity, or otherwise.

 c. Rising Expectations

As students progress through their years at elementary school it is expected that the level of personal accountability will increase and that leadership skills will develop and progress, in preparation for successful middle and high school experiences.

 d. Consequences

  • Responses to unacceptable conduct may include any and/or all of the following:  discussion with the student, discussion with a staff member and student, discussion with administration, Team Documentation Form, Behaviour Incident Form (office referral), telephone call home, meeting with parent(s);
  • Mediation and/or conflict resolution (student to student)
  • Student initiated consequence (with guidance from administration)
  • Special considerations may apply to the imposition of consequences on a student with special needs if the student is unable to comply with this Code of Conduct due to a disability of an intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional or behavioural n

e. Notification

In instances where serious breaches of the code of conduct have occurred, school officials may have a responsibility to communicate to other parties.  These parties may include some and/or all of the following:

  • Parents of the students
  • School district officials, as required by school district policy
  • Police and/or other agencies, as required by law
  • All parents within the school community, in cases where it is important to reassure all members of the school community that school officials are aware of a serious situation or incident and are taking appropriate actions to address the matter.
