Pitt River Community Middle School originally opened in 1964 as Mary Hill Junior Secondary School. It received a major addition in 1971. In 1996 Mary Hill Junior was officially converted to a grade 6-8 middle school and was renamed Pitt River Middle School. Over time, the school developed a strong relationship with the local community and began offering numerous programs in conjunction with local non-profit and governmental agencies. Pitt River Middle School was therefore designated a community school in 2006.
In January 2009 Pitt River was announced as one of the 5 major replacement or new school capital projects in the district. The new school will be built to LEED Gold standards and designed with the intent of meeting the learning needs of students for the next 50 years. Busby, Perkins and Will Architects have been awarded the contract to design the new Pitt River Middle School replacement building. The replacement school will be built for a capacity of 450 students.
UPDATES:
The district is currently in the final design phase for the replacement building. The anticipated start date for construction is Fall 2011. As the old school building will need to maintain operation during construction, the plans require a phased approach to the building of the new school.
The Ministry of Education has also approved the addition of a Neighbourhood Learning Centre in Pitt River Middle School. The NLC will be home to an Aboriginal Welcoming Centre, Community School Offices and classroom, Centre for Sports Training (in conjunction with the City of Port Coquitlam and the Port Coquitlam Sports Alliance) and a satellite office for Settlement Workers In Schools.
