School History:
James Park Elementary School originally opened in 1913. Through the years it has gone through a series of additions and renovations. Most notably in 1963, 1964, 1967 and 1969. These included the addition of classrooms and a library and the removal of older sections of the building. To deal with the growing population in the Port Coquitlam area, the James Park Annex was also added in 1969. The annex also went through a series of additions in 1970, 1971 and 1978.
The school was originally scheduled for a seismic upgrade in the 2008/2009 school year but a decision was made by the Ministry of Education to provide a replacement school, The replacement school will be designed with the intent of meeting the learning needs of students for the next 50 years.
Grant and Sinclair has been assigned as the architectural firm that will be designing James Park Elementary. The initial stages of the project have begun with a detailed analysis of school property soil. Once the quality of the soils have been determined, the siting and design phase will begin. The intent is to build the new James Park while students continue their educational studies in the original facility.
Concurrently, the district has also engaged in the process of determining the appropriateness of James Park for the Government's new Neighbourhoods of Learning initiative. We held a public consultation on Neighbourhoods of Learning at James Park Elementary on Wednesday September 30 at 7:30 pm.
