SD43 Remembers Canada's Veterans

November 08, 2017

This week, SD43 remembers Canada's veterans and their service and sacrifice for our country by holding assemblies, creating special exhibits and engaging in meaningful activities leading up to Remembrance Day. Students, employees and trustees will also represent SD43 by attending ceremonies in the community on Saturday, November 11.

Here are a few special highlights of the many exceptional Remembrance Day activities undertaken by our students and employees this year:

Port Moody Station Museum Exhibit "Tell Us the Stories"

Pleasantside Elementary Teacher Jennifer Whiffin, in partnership with Port Moody Station Museum, coordinated a very special Remembrance Day exhibit called "Tell Us the Stories" made by students and their families from three SD43 schools: Anmore Elementary, Pleasantside Elementary and Eagle Mountain Middle.

Mrs. Whiffin stresses the significance of this exhibit in "helping students better understand their own history and preserve their connection to it" by featuring the photos, artifacts and stories of relatives and ancestors of students from these schools who experienced the conflicts of the twentieth century. The community is encouraged to come to the Port Moody Station Museum to discover these amazing wartime histories of families in our community.

The official opening for the exhibit is November 12 at 4:00 p.m. and will run until December 1. In addition, members of the Pleasantside and Anmore choirs will be performing at the opening event.

Two grade 3 students, Dylan and Wesley from Pleasantside Elementary attempt to answer the question, "What was it like in World War 1?" with interviews of Markus Fahrner from Port Moody Station Museum about World War 1 and the replica trench exhibit at the museum.

Dr. Charles Best Honour Wall

Mme. Bruneau helped to set up a very special honour wall for Remembrance Day at Dr. Charles Best Secondary filled with photos, stories and wartime artifacts that were donated from school staff and their families.
