SD43 SSEP Mission Patch winners announced

March 30, 2017

SD43-SSEPpatches-web.jpgSchool District No. 43 (Coquitlam) is proud to announce that Emily Reilhan and Kathleen Diaz Ng have been selected as the winners of the Student SpaceFlight Experiments Program (SSEP) Mission Patch design competition.

The two respective winning designs will be turned into official patches and will accompany SD43’s winning science experiment designed by Riverside Secondary students Brenda Shen and Alexa Durand to the International Space Station. The experiment will study the effects of microgravity on concrete used in building structures.

Reilhan, a grade 8 student at École Moody Middle School of the Arts, designed a patch depicting a pair of iconic Canadian animals donning spacesuits.

“We were advised to draw something Canadian-related so I just thought, ‘hey, you know what’s Canadian-related? Moose!’” said Reilhan. “I started with that as the main idea and eventually added a beaver and some planets to fit the space theme. I always have been fascinated by the concept of space and it’s crazy to think that some stranger might see my name and recognize it because of my mission patch.”

Diaz Ng, a grade 8 student from École Maillard Middle School, designed a patch showing an astronaut against a background of the earth, a rising sun and the flag of British Columbia.

“I got inspired by thinking about past First Nations designs I drew at school and the British Columbian flag,” said Diaz Ng. “After some careful free hand drawing and a lot of erasing, I finally ended up with my final product. I am very thankful for my passion for art because I would have never guessed that it could lead to being seen by astronauts.”

SD43’s experiment will be part of the SSEP Mission 11 payload to the ISS, and is currently planned to launch on a SpaceX Falcon-9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, adjoining the Kennedy Space Center, later in 2017.

More details and updates on the project can be found on the SD43 website at: www.sd43.bc.ca/pages/space.aspx
