About Heritage Mountain

Heritage Mountain Elementary is situated at 125 Ravine Drive on the north shore of Port Moody, British Columbia.  The school services children in Kindergarten to Grade Five.  Being built on the side of a mountain (elevation, 141m) provides our school community with a fantastic view of Burnaby Mountain and Coquitlam.  The school opened in the 1992-1993 school year as the neighbourhood was being built.  The school shares two facilities with the City of Port Moody.  A small Tot Lot playground is situated on the North-West corner of the property.  A large grass field is located South-West of the school.  The school community has exclusive use of the field during school hours, and sports groups use the field during evenings and weekends.  The City of Port Moody share in the maintenance of both facilities.  The school gymnasium is also rented to sports groups for evening use.

The neighbourhood surrounding Heritage Mountain is made up of a mix of detached homes and townhouses.  Prices in 2010-2011 for detached houses range from $700 000 to $900 000.  Townhouses range between $350 000 to $600 000.

Our grade four students have just completed the Middle Years Development Instrument in 2011  that will provide additional qualitative data about the families living in our neighbourhood.

In 2006, Heritage Woods Secondary School opened 700m away from our school.  The students continue to be bussed to Moody Middle School, (3500m from Heritage Mountain) for Grades 6, 7 and 8 and return to Heritage Woods Secondary School for Grades 9 onwards.  There is a capital plan to build a middle school on the same site as the high school.  The new middle school is slated to open in 2013.  Children living in the neighbourhood will then be able to comfortably walk to their elementary, middle and high school.

The school has a special relationship with the Vancouver Canucks organization.  Former student Jeff Tambellini (#10) has maintained contact with the staff over the years.  He came back to visit his former alma mater in February.  Teacher Debbie Grist and her Grade 1/2 class has sent letters of support to Mr. Tambellini during the season.

Heritage Mountain is a multi-cultural school.  Our English as a Second Language program is projected to service 44 students in 2011-2012.  We hosted 25 International Education students, all from Korea.
